Traffic Calming

What is Traffic Calming?

Traffic calming consists of physical design and other measures put in place on existing streets to reduce vehicle speeds and improve safety for pedestrians, bicycle riders, and other drivers. Illegal speeding on residential and commercial streets is a serious problem. It creates unsafe conditions for other street users and can hurt the quality of life for neighborhood residents.

Most people know about speed humps, but traffic calming can also include measures like on-street parking, narrower travel lanes, and traffic circles.

How Can I Get Traffic Calming on my Street?

The Birmingham Department of Transportation recently published a Traffic Calming Policy. This document explains why traffic calming is important and how you can apply for traffic calming on your street.

After reading the policy, make sure to also check out the special projects help sheet. This guide has helpful information regarding project funding for traffic calming measures.

To submit a traffic calming candidate site, you can:

    • Submit a 311 request via the web portal or by calling (205) 254-2489
