Anyone applying to be a refuse collector or laborer, must take an agility skills test. The next agility test will be March 17, 2023 at Legion Field (parking lot near Fire Station) from 9:00am – 1:00pm. You must apply for the position before taking the agility skills test. We are accepting paper applications or they can apply through the google link – www.birminghamal.gov/workforbham.

During this agility skills test, you will be asked to complete 8 different physical tasks based on an unclassified Department of Public Works employee’s potential job duties. Because you are completing a physical assessment, please dress comfortably in athletic apparel and tennis shoes, and you may also bring water, Gatorade or Powerade to drink.

Where Do I Go? Legion Field Lot F – parking lot adjacent to Birmingham Fire Station # 14 210 Graymont Ave W. 35204.

When Do I Report For The Physical Agility Screening?
Candidates will complete registration at their scheduled registration/arrival time.

What Do I Bring With Me?
All applicants must bring a state-issued unexpired photo ID or identification card.

What Should I Wear?
You should wear loose-fitting clothing, which will allow you to be comfortable in attempting the assigned tasks. The best clothing type would be exercise clothing such as a sweat suit with a T-shirt and shorts underneath. It is suggested that you do not wear tight clothing, which will interfere with full movement. Running shoes or exercise shoes of some kind are recommended. DO NOT WEAR STREET SHOES, SLIDES OR HEELS.

Can I Be Disqualified From Participating?
Yes, if you are late reporting to the screening, you will not be permitted to take the physical agility test. If at any point, the use of alcoholic beverages and/or drugs (including the effects thereof) is detected and witnessed, the participant(s) shall be disqualified immediately. Smoking among the participants shall be prohibited during the screening.

What Happens After The Physical Agility Testing?
If you successfully pass all tasks, you will be scheduled for a medical exam and drug screening at a local clinic. You will be notified the day of the agility testing if you passed or failed.

If I Fail, Can I Retake The Screening? You will be eligible one (1) year after the date of your last screening.

Health And Safety Protocols (Post COVID-19)
Each candidate’s temperature will be checked at registration before the agility skills testing begins. If the temperature is above 100.4 degrees, the candidate will not be permitted to participate in the testing. All candidates will be required to wear a face covering until instructed to drop their face covering below their chin to allow ventilation during the testing portion. The City will provide gloves during the evaluation. We will have each candidate wait for their exact time to complete the agility evaluation during the testing. Everyone will remain 6 feet apart from one another until called.

What Will I Be Asked To Do?
Applicants will be asked to complete six (6) task to measure specific physical abilities related to fitness and health. You may be asked to complete the tasks listed below or a task similar to the listing below.

Task # 1 Run/Walk (Push & Pull Station)

Test Procedure: Push a weighted wheelbarrow 25 ft to cone and pull 25ft backwards to cone. Run/walk 25ft to station 2.

 Task # 2 Box Steps

Test Procedure: Step up and down 12X on a 12-inch-highstep. Run/walk 25 feet to station 3

 Task # 3 Waist/Twist Station

Test Procedure: Lift 30-pound loaded crate and walk 3 feet between two platforms. Place the loaded milk case to the left platform. Remove the milk case and place on the floor between the platform. Now lift and step back to the starting point. Run/Walk 25 feet to station 4

 Task # 4 Overhead Lift

Test Procedure: Lift a 20lb, 30lb, and 50lb box each from the floor to a platform 48 inches high and back to the floor. Run/walk 25 feet to station 5

 Task # 5 Stepping up on bumper and climbing onto refuse truck.

Test Procedure: Step onto the refuse truck bumper and climb off 2 times.

 Task # 6 Dumping into Refuse Hopper

Test Procedure: Unload 3 trash cans containing  sandbags (50lb) into refuse hopper. Place the empty trash cans back at their stating positions. Remove the sandbags from the refuse hopper and place one into each trash can. Walk 10 ft and come back to starting position. Repeat process 2 times
