What is Shared Micromobility?

Micromobility refers to small and slow modes of transportation, like bikes and scooters. A shared micromobility system allows you to use your smartphone to rent a bicycle or scooter from dozens of spots around the city. When you’re finished, you can drop it off at a different parking location.  Take a bicycle to work, a scooter to your next class, or just ride around for fun! This system will provide Birmingham residents with even more transportation options. In addition, it will allow drivers to consider other ways of getting to where they need to go.

Bringing Micromobility to the Magic City

Micromobility has been in place in Birmingham since the popular Zyp BikeShare program. A new shared micromobility system will bring more ride options and cover a larger area of the city.

2015-2019: Zyp BikeShare

Zyp was an initiative of REV Birmingham. Their bright green bikes were available at more than 40 stations throughout Birmingham. When Zyp launched, it became the first public bikeshare program in Alabama.

February 2020: Shared Micromobility Ordinance

After months (perhaps years!) of discussion, the Birmingham City Council officially adopted the Shared Micromobility Ordinance. This document sets the rules for riding shared bicycles and scooters in the city.

April 2020 – June 2020: Application Period

During the spring and early summer, private companies were able to apply for a permit to operate in Birmingham.

July 2020 – August 2020: Application Review

BDOT took several months to talk to applicants about their proposals. We made sure that potential vendors met the requirements of the ordinance and would be able to provide a high-quality service for the city.

Fall 2020: City Council Resolution

The Birmingham City Council passed a resolution to grant permits to two companies: Gotcha and Veo. Each company will be deploying 500 vehicles: a mix of electric bikes, pedal bikes, and electric scooters. Click here to read the full press release.

Spring 2021: System Roll-Out

Beginning in April, bikes and scooters became available for residents to rent!
