Good Jobs!

The City of Birmingham was awarded $10.8 million from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA)’s Good Jobs Challenge grant, one of six competitive grant programs within the American Rescue Plan. The City’s grant award will develop the Birmingham Region Health Partnership (BRHP), a healthcare workforce training program designed to build a pipeline of skilled healthcare and digital health workers prepared to meet the demands of regional industry.

The pandemic exposed a need in Birmingham’s healthcare ecosystem. The industry continues to experience workforce shortages, with a need to minimize vulnerability in preparing to respond to the next public health crisis. Led by the City of Birmingham, in partnership with the region’s five largest healthcare employers, and several partners including Central Six AlabamaWorks!, STRIVE, Prosper, and the Women’s Foundation of Alabama, the BRHP was formed to address these challenges and co-design a solution.

Over the duration of the grant, the BRHP and it’s partners expect to train 1,000 jobseekers in high-quality, in-demand healthcare occupations throughout the region. Notably, this partnership seeks to provide marginalized communities like women and Black people,  who have historically been excluded from high-paying jobs within the healthcare field, an opportunity to access pathways into high-quality healthcare occupations.

Next Steps

Over the course of the next few months the BRHP will focus on program design, developing programs that directly connect jobseekers with current vacancies with regional healthcare employers.
