Overview:

The Birmingham Historical Commission is composed of eleven (11) members who are charged with the responsibility of promoting, enhancing, and preserving the character of historic properties and districts to achieve the purposes of the City’s Historic Preservation Ordinance.  Ten of these members are nominated by the Mayor and appointed by the Birmingham City Council.  Of these ten members, at least one member is selected to represent each of the following organizations or categories: Jefferson County Historical Commission, Birmingham Historical Society, Design Review Committee, community groups, professional preservationists, professional planners/architects, and professional historians.  The chairman of the Council committee on planning and zoning or his designee shall serve ex-officio as the eleventh member of the Commission with full power to vote and be counted.
