City of Birmingham events to reflect on the 20th anniversary of 9/11
BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA — Sept. 9, 2021 — The City of Birmingham will pause to reflect on the 20th anniversary of 9/11 with certain events and city partners. Please see list below.
1. On Saturday, City of Birmingham VISTAS and City of Birmingham Customer Service Director Alicia Lumpkin will meet at Fire Station No. 1 at 8:40 a.m. to drop off goodie bags, which will contain thank you notes and cards written by area children. The VISTAS and Lumpkin will remain at Station No. 1 as the fire department starts its salute to the lives lost during 9/11. (See fire department schedule below.) 2. More than 60 artists will showcase their work during Art Walk on Friday and Saturday in the 200 and 300 blocks of 20th Street North. Art Walk will be held from 5 to 10 p.m. on Sept. 10 and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sept. 11. Go here for more info on Art Walk. Restaurants in the area will be open.
At 12 p.m. on Sept. 11, a Birmingham fire ladder truck will be in the 300 block of 20th Street North and unfurl the American flag. At 12 p.m. with the American flag in the background, Art Walk will take a moment of silence in honor of all lives lost on 9/11. 3. Art Walk organizers will place 30 American flags, provided by the National Veterans Day organization, along 20th Street North on Saturday morning. The flags will remain on display all day during Art Walk. The contact person is Denise Koch, 205-410-8776.
4. City Hall will be lit up red, white and blue Sept. 10, 11 and 12. The contact person is Don Lupo, 205-335-4573.
5. A City of Birmingham “We Remember’’ image is attached.
6. Magic City Blight Busters will host a community clean-up project on Sept. 11 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. in Fountain Heights. The meeting place will be at Fountain Heights Rec Center. The contact person is Darlena Battle, 205-515-0544.

In an effort to live up to the promise to “Never Forget” and to honor those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001, the Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service Department will conduct a city-wide observance, remembering each occasion that a plane crashed on that tragic day.
At set times below, the fire department dispatcher will say, “Please pause for a moment of silence.” At that point, designated fire departments will turn on its emergency lights of all apparatus and all personnel shall stand at attention. At the conclusion of each observance, the dispatcher will say “All stations may resume your normal activities,” after which personnel will return the apparatus to operational readiness.

At 8:46 a.m. – American Airlines Flight 2 struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center.
At 8:46 a.m., the following stations will participate in the memorial:

At 9:03 a.m. – United Airlines Flight 175 struck the South Tower of the World Trade Center.
At 9:03 a.m., the following stations will participate in the memorial:
Station # 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 14, 18, 21
At 9:37 a.m. – American Airlines Flight 77 struck the Pentagon in Washington D.C.
At 9:37 a.m., the following stations will participate in the memorial:
Station # 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 19, 22, 23
At 10:03 a.m.– United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in a Shanksville, Pennsylvania field after passengers struggled with the terrorists.
