Organizations have planned several events for Juneteenth on June 19

BIRMINGHAM, AL – As a reminder, City of Birmingham offices, except for fire, 911 and police, will close on Friday, June 18 at 12 p.m. for Juneteenth. The early closure will not affect the collection of trash collection. Also, certain downtown Birmingham streets will be closed on Saturday, June 19 as several organizations host Juneteenth events. Some of them include:

*The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, Urban Impact, Creed 63 and the National Juneteenth Observance Foundation of Alabama have planned several events in and around the Civil Rights District and Kelly Ingram Park on Saturday, June 19. All events are free. There will be a children’s village, music, food, vendors and more.

*A parade presented by the National Juneteenth Observance Foundation of Alabama will start at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 19 at Sixth Avenue North and 16th Street North near 16th Street Baptist Church.  Lineup will start around 7:30 a.m. The parade, which should end around 10 or 10:30 a.m., will end at 16th Street North and Sixth Avenue North. Please take note of the attached map for the parade route and closed streets.

*16th street Baptist Church, 1530 Sixth Ave. North, will host a COVID-19 vaccination clinic on Saturday, June 19 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. (Sixth Avenue North in front of the church will be blocked because of Juneteenth. However, clinic attendees will be able to access the church by taking 15th Street North and entering parking lot next to the church.)

Directions to the church:

From I-65, take Fifth Avenue North to downtown then turn left on 15th Street North.

From Reverend Abraham Woods Jr Blvd (west or east), turn left or right to 15th Street North

Signage to enter the church will be located on Sixth Avenue North in front of the church.

*Several National Juneteenth Observance Foundation of Alabama events are planned at the pavilion in Kelly Ingram Park from 10:30 a.m. to about 3 p.m.

*The BCRI building will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. But due to COVID-19 social distancing practices, space is limited. Attendees must visit the BCRI website to reserve tickets in advance to access the BCRI exhibits during Juneteenth. Visit www.bcri.org for more info. There will be a Children’s Crusade Village, Black Wealth Matters Village and a visit from the Freedom Ride for Voting Rights Tour in its signature “Blackest Bus in America.”

*BCRI will have a main stage at 16th Street and Sixth Avenue North. Several performances and appearances are planned throughout the day for the stage, including a movie showing at dark. Events are slated to end around 10 p.m.

*Entrepreneur Danielle Hines will host a ribbon cutting and open house for CREED63, a new co-working space located in the Arthur Shores Law Center, in the 1600 block of Fifth Avenue North. Events start at 2 p.m.

When will streets be blocked and reopened?

FRIDAY

*   Area near BCRI will be blocked off on Friday, June 18 around 5:30 p.m.

SATURDAY

*   Other areas around Civil Rights District will be blocked off on Saturday morning, starting around 7 a.m.
*   Parade starts at 9 a.m.

SUNDAY

All streets should be reopened by 8:30 a.m.

Events in other locations

 * Arlington House will host a Juneteenth event, complete with food, music from the Clark Collective jazz band and an art show, on Friday, June 18 from 5 to 8 p.m. $20 per person. The address is 331 Cotton Ave. The number is 205-780-5656.

*The Modern Green Book’s First Juneteenth Fest will take place at Legion Field on Saturday, June 19 from 12 to 10 p.m. Free admission before 5 p.m. Event will include food trucks, vendors, a Hip Hop Showcase and live performances from local artists. Go here for more info.

*The Birmingham Public Library will host its “Read-In for Justice” program on Friday, June 18, beginning at 10 a.m. at Learning Tree Park, which is next to the Five Points West Library, 4812 Ave. W (across from the Birmingham CrossPlex). Participants will read works about the issues of race and social justice.

*Sidewalk Cinema will host a showing of “Miss Juneteenth” on Saturday, June 19 at 2:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. in downtown Birmingham. For more info, go here.
