Birmingham City Schools 2020 graduates have until Aug. 14 to submit financial aid to Birmingham Promise
BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA — Aug. 13, 2020 — Birmingham City Schools Class of 2020 graduates interested in the Birmingham Promise but have not yet completed their financial aid paperwork, have until Friday, Aug. 14 to do so. The original deadline was in March, but the Birmingham Promise has extended the deadline to this Friday.
The Birmingham Promise provides a last-dollar option for students to attend college, covering tuition costs for students when they have been accepted into a post-secondary school. The extension is the result of the COVID-19 pandemic and student delays in completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, also known as FAFSA.
“We’re proud to say that nearly 690 students are eligible for the Birmingham Promise this fall,” Mayor Randall L. Woodfin said. “However, the Birmingham Promise has not heard from about 200 students. The Birmingham Promise was created to help all students, and the program is doing all that it can to make sure students take advantage of this opportunity.’’
Earlier this year, Birmingham City Schools high school seniors signed up for the Birmingham Promise and indicated their school choice. However, some students were not accepted into their school of choice and they have not followed up with the Birmingham Promise or financial aid to update officials on their Plan B. Birmingham Promise Executive Director Rachel Harmon said that even if students do not plan to go to college this fall, they should contact her team by Aug. 14.
Harmon delivered that message and more earlier this week when she joined Mayor Woodfin on a teletown hall call to take questions from Birmingham Promise students and their parents.
