Applications being accepted for Birmingham Water Works Board appointment

Due to a vacancy on the Birmingham Water Works Board, the Mayor’s Office is accepting applications for consideration on the board.

The vacancy represents one of two seats the Birmingham mayor appoints to the nine-member board.

The appointments to the full board are as follows:

  • Birmingham City Council 4
  • Mayor of Birmingham 2
  • Jefferson County Mayor’s Association 1
  • Shelby County Commission 1
  • Blount County Commission 1

The appointment to the vacancy will fill a currently unexpired term through January 1, 2021. The appointment will be based on a review of applications and an interview of finalists.

The qualifications mandated by law for the position are:

1. Must be a resident of the municipality or county making the appointment.

2. Must be a water customer of Birmingham Water Works.

3. May not be an elected official.

It is preferred candidates for the board vacancy have:

1. Previous experience serving on a board of directors.

2. Community organization experience.

3. General understanding of financial reports.

4. Understanding of capital infrastructure/scale of organization.
