Mayor Woodfin to kick off community responder training April 29 at 4 p.m.

Birmingham, Ala.  In March, Mayor Randall Woodfin made a commitment to offer classes to teach the public how to respond during an emergency and possibly save a life. Starting today at 4 p.m., the City of Birmingham, UAB and the Housing Authority of the Birmingham District will offer free workshops. The free classes are for ages 14 and up.

The workshops will offer hands-on CPR training, how to apply a tourniquet, how to pack a bleeding wound, how to properly apply pressure to an injury and tips on how to respond during tornadoes, fires and other disasters. Victims can quickly die from uncontrolled bleeding as soon as five or 10 minutes after an injury.

“A class last week at the East Precinct, attracted Birmingham police officers and residents ready to learn how to offer assistance during an emergency involving an injury with excessive bleeding from an accident, disaster, gunshot wound or stab wound. Such information can be life-changing for the attendees and those they may have to help in the future,’’ Mayor Woodfin said. “I hope no one will ever be put in a situation where these skills are needed. But I have comfort in knowing that if they ever face such a situation, they will be comfortable in putting into action what they have learned.’’

The classes will be held at the following locations:

  • Monday, April 29 – Bethel House, also known as the Smithfield Community Center, 421 Eighth Ave. North
  • Monday, May 6 – Collegeville Community Center, 3029 – 29th Ave. North
  • Monday, May 13 –  Morton Simpson Community Center, 4609 Eighth Court North
  • Monday, May 20 – Marks Village Community Center, 7277 – 66th St. South
