Learn more about Birmingham Xpress Bus Rapid Transit Project during meetings beginning Feb. 4

Residents are encouraged to weigh in on the upcoming Birmingham Xpress Bus Rapid Transit Project during a series of meetings beginning Feb. 4.

The $44 million bus rapid transit project is expected to break ground in May, with construction kicking off in the early summer. The system will replace the Birmingham Jefferson County Transit Authority’s MAX bus services and will include new traffic signals along the 10-mile bus rapid transit corridor.

A series of community meetings discussing the project will be held at the following dates and times:

Monday, Feb. 4, 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. at the BJCTA Administrative Office, 1801 Morris Ave, 35202

Tuesday, Feb. 5, 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. at the Birmingham CrossPlex, 2337 Bessemer Rd, 35208

Wednesday, Feb. 6, 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., Woodlawn High School, 5620 1st Ave N, 35212

To RSVP for these meetings, visit the BRT Public Involvement website here.

The new system will implement innovative system designs and technologies to improve travel time, lower costs, and enhance service appeal. Described as “light-rail transit on rubber tires,” BRT can travel as fast as light rail, but at approximately one-third of the construction costs.

The new system aims to better connect communities and improve residents’ commute to educational, employment and health-care opportunities. It also plans to allow easier access for visitors looking to explore Birmingham’s amenities.

The project is funded by a combination of federal transit grant funds and contributions from the City of Birmingham.
