Additional shelters in Birmingham will assist those in need this week

Birmingham, AL — In addition to the City of Birmingham warming station set to open at Boutwell Auditorium tonight at 8 p.m.because of cold weather, several nonprofit partners have limited space for those in need. They include:

  • Jimmie Hale Mission, men only, 40 – 50 mats, 3420 Second Ave. North
  • Firehouse Ministries, men only, 1501 Third Ave. North.
  • Salvation Army, men (15), women and women with dependent children, 2015 26th Ave. North.
  • First Light, women and women with dependent minor children, 2230 Fourth Ave. North.

Crews are at Boutwell now to accept non-perishable foods, including sandwiches, oranges and bananas. Warm meals will also be accepted.

Here are a few more reminders about how the City of Birmingham will handle the threat of severe winter weather this week: 

  • City offices will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 29. However, those working in essential roles for fire, police and 911 will report to work.
  • There will be no pick up of household trash, bulk trash or limbs on Tuesday.
  • The city council meeting that was set for Jan. 29, has been rescheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 5.
  • The city’s Department of Public Works will have sand trucks ready to assist with road conditions.
  • Those interested in staying connected with new developments about city office closings, delayed openings and more, should sign up, via text, for weather updates connected to city operations. Please text BhmInfo to 888-777.
