Birmingham City Center Master Plan kick-off set for Sept. 19 and 20

BIRMINGHAM – Residents are encouraged to weigh in on the future of downtown development during two Birmingham City Center Kick-off meetings set for Sept. 19 and 20.

The first open house is set for Wednesday, Sept. 19 at Railroad Park Pavilion, 1600 1st Ave. S, from 5 to 7 p.m. The second takes place Thursday, Sept. 20 at Good People Brewing, 114 14th St. S. from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The last Birmingham City Center Master Plan Update was completed in 2004. Now, 14 years later, the city has grown with many major investments, including

Railroad Park and Regions Field; mixed-use developments in Parkside; and renovations of historic buildings like the Pizitz and the Empire buildings.

The Birmingham City Center Master Plan will be a comprehensive look at land use, zoning, urban design, parking, and strategic planning that will identify short, medium and long term projects for public and private investment in the City Center for the next 10-15 years. The plan will be guided by a detailed market analysis that will examine retail, residential, office and industrial trends and will establish future market demand.

The plan will also focus on furthering the development of the sub-districts within the heart of the City Center, such as the Birmingham Civil Rights District, the Innovation District, and the Local Historic Districts, and will address potential new redevelopment areas.
