Mayor will interview finalists for police chief

The City of Birmingham has narrowed the executive search for a police chief to three candidates.

Those candidates are scheduled to meet Mayor Randall L. Woodfin for individual interviews between April 23 – 25.

This is the latest step in a nationwide search that began with collecting applications from Feb. 1 to March 9. More than 50 candidates – both locally and across the nation – applied for the position.

“We want to identify the best person to lead the Birmingham Police Department,” Mayor Woodfin said. “This national search enabled us to look at candidates from across the country and now we will take a close look at the finalists in this process.”

The finalists were selected from a pool of 11 applicants invited to take part in an assessment process on March 19. An assessment center was created for participants to handle a series of realistic leadership situations. Once those candidates completed the assessment process, a detailed review of their performance was conducted.

The same process to select the next police chief was used to hire the city’s Human Resources Department director and deputy director. Human Resources Director Jill Madajczyk and Deputy Director Jenea Jones were appointed on April 2 after an extended national search that included nearly 170 applicants.

The city is currently reviewing applications for Director of Information Management Services. The application process was completed on April 6. Applications will be reviewed and candidates will be selected to take part in the assessment center later this month.

Currently, the city is accepting applications for the Director of Public Works. The application process will close on May 13.

The city will begin accepting applications in May for the Director of Finance.
